Experiencing Immigration Essays - Demography, Population

Experiencing Immigration The United States has been notorious for welcoming peoples from all over the world onto its lands in order to facilitate the growth of a diverse nation and generations of families have traveled to America in search of creating lives more fulfilling than those they had escaped. During the years of the late 1800s and early 1900s, the United States allowed the highest rates of immigration in its history with groups from a number of different countries sought an escape from the economical, political, and religious hardships their own nations bequeathed. This massive influx of such a myriad of ethnicities irreversibly changed the evolution of the newly formed United States and challenged existing ideas and attitudes of what constituted an American citizen. In addition, immigrants were faced with the difficult task of finding equilibrium in what seemed, and often was, a world full of chaos. Although those traveling to America came from contrasting origins, the trials and tribulations they endured were much the same. Reasons for immigration, arrival, living and working conditions, socialization, and increasing assimilation into the American culture were experiences common to all immigrating groups. These areas of adjustment and the ways in which they evolved illustrates typical immigrant experiences and proves that this was an era that truly shaped the evolution of the world. In general, factors pushing immigrants to emigrate from their own countries take on similar themes across groups. Fleeing religious persecution, seeking political asylum, and escaping economic hardships were just a few of the common situations that influenced the search for improvement in America. Some immigrants began their journeys with plans of obtaining seasonal work to augment their meager incomes and most intended on returning to their native lands thereafter. As time went on and relatives already in the United States enticed families to join them, those immigrating commenced with no future plans of returning to their homes. The rapid increase of immigrants entering under these circumstances led Americans to question the lenient policies of immigration that were implemented by the United States government and created controversial issues encompassing all involved. In addition to reasons for leaving their native countries, immigrants also shared the experience of the long and exhausting trek to America. Although some arrived via railway or, in few cases, airway, most were tightly packed onto steamships, enduring extremely unsanitary conditions. Passengers funded the trip with money they had saved or had boarding passes sent by friends or relatives already in America, as was generally the case. Despite the surge of excitement in arriving to their destination, immigrants were exhausted, hungry, and scared when they first encounter with their new home. Ellis Island, located in New Yorks harbor, was the arrival point for the majority of immigrants coming during the early 1900s. This building was designed in order to organize the process through which immigrants were granted entry. The officials working in this building enforced laws and orders passed from 1885-1907 which barred people with contagious diseased, paupers and persons likely to become public charges, and also antichrists, prostitutes, the mentally deficient, and the disabled. (American Identity Explorer CD-ROM) The tests that measured these ailments included medical, eye, and physical exams as well as two-minute interviews in which the immigrant had to prove that he or she had money, a place to live, and if not employment, then the means to obtain it. It was a long and grueling process to endure for the immigrant that had just arrived from a several day steamship cruise. Ridden by exhaustion, hunger, confusion, and anticipation, the immigrant was faced with hours of inte rrogations and examinations. It is amazing that 80% of immigrants were allowed passage and despite the number withheld pending further exam, only 8% of those wishing to enter were prohibited and deported to their native lands. (Lecture: 07 Feb 00) Fortunately for the immigrants, most had been prepared for the notorious experience of Ellis Island from family already in the United States. They were generally instructed on what questions would be asked and what the proper responses were so that despite the intimidation of Ellis Islands grandeur impression, the new arrivals had some a small amount of comfort in its predictability. Once the hours of examinations were completed

In the Eye of the Beholder essays

In the Eye of the Beholder essays Cosmetic surgery is just another part of raising a daughter if you live in Asia. Asian women-and progressively more men-are doing anything in order to look as what they perceive as beautiful (Cullen). In Korea an estimated one in 10 adults has received some type of surgical improvement, and several years ago, an Asian doctor even began a travel agency that offered plastic surgery tours for the Japanese. Tour packages include airfare, hotel, sightseeing, and, say, a boob job-all for the cost of a procedure alone back home (Cullen). There are three theories that provide reasonable explanations for this behavior. One theory is that Asians want to look more Caucasian, but other theories argue that it is just to display wealth or a response to increased job competition. The most considered of the three theories, the Caucasian theory, can be explained by Asias changing ideals of beauty due to the unrelenting attack of Western films and television shows. Audiences think that stars reach their status based on their appearance; therefore, when women of other cultures are constantly seeing white, skinny, attractive actresses on the screen, their perception of beauty begins to transform to fit those standards. The people of Asia are increasingly undergoing cosmetic surgery to get wider eyes, longer noses, and fuller breasts-features not typical of their race but of the Caucasian race (Cullen). The type of surgery most favored in Asia is called a blepharoplasty because it provides more definition in the eyes and gives them the double-eyelid effect that Caucasians have. The popularity of a blepharoplasty in Asia is comparable to liposuction, a rhinoplasty (nose job), or a breast augmentation in the United States of America (Sherwood). It is a procedur e that reshapes the eye and gives it a crease by cutting away fat from the eyelid by scalpel or by needle and thread. If surgery is ...

Technology stack - Case Study Example It includes layers of components or services which are used for providing software solutions. Technology stack is also articulated as a list of technologies and programming languages for instance ‘Java’, ‘C++’ and ‘SQL Server’ among other programs. It is considered to be the base for developing any kind of application. The report is based on technology stack of a popular web application named Twitter. The objective of the report is to understand the use of technologies towards developing Twitter. The report also aims at understanding the hindrances that twitter witnessed owing to the usage or application of such a technology. Furthermore, the report also describes the future of Twitter as a web application. History of Twitter Twitter is a web application which facilitates people to communicate by using text, graphics and other formats. It was developed in the year 2006 and soon achieved huge admiration by people internationally, as several users joined the application to share information. The core of Twitter’s business is free ‘Application Programming Interface’ (APIs) for every task undertaken by a user on the portal. The idea of Twitter web application was first initiated during a hack project in an organization named ODEO. Over years, the organization attempted to make the aspect of sharing information easier for people. Consequently, the engineers began prototyping programs for better information sharing which turned into Twitter in the later days. Ruby on Rails is identified to be the technological stack of Twitter. Twitter uses Rails application with lots of Ruby programming, performing asynchronous functions in the back-end design (Makice, 2009). Where the Application Fits In Relation to Similar Applications Apart from Twitter, Ruby on Rails also fits in several web applications such as Groupon, Shopify and Yellow Pages among other websites. Several fastest web oriented organizations are applyin g Ruby on Rails structure with high number of readers and subscribers. Ruby on Rails is considered as the most dynamic way to construct a web application. Where other custom applications can be quite expensive to develop, Ruby on Rails makes the application development quite cost-effective for organizations which do not desire to take risk by spending money on technological experimentation (Hansson, n.d). The Technology on which Twitter is Built Twitter is built on Ruby on Rails structure. It is known to be a full-stack internet application which helped in forming Twitter. Ruby is generally referred as a programming language and Rails is a kind of technological framework. Together Ruby and Rails provides required tools and components which are essential to form powerful application in an instinctual environment. Ruby on Rails helps in ensuring the aspect of website development to be increasingly effectual and less troublesome. As it is a full-stack internet application, Ruby on Rail s helped Twitter to encompass both areas i.e. ‘front-end’ and ‘back-end’ design (Slater, 2008). In the recent days, Twitter has been learnt to have shifted its ‘front-end’ search function from Ruby and Rails to a Java application named ‘Blender’. This shift was inspired owing to the benefits of Java. Java is believed to provide high level of performance and enhanced scalability. Furthermore, it was also determined by the wish for better encapsulation of different services and other architectural aspects. Blender is a HTTP service developed on ‘Netty’, a high accessible client server transcribed by Java language, which

Degrading Women In Ads Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Degrading Women In Ads - Essay Example Most Americans spends larger percentage of the day viewing TV advertisements. The advertisements sell an extensive number than brands. Advertisements sell messages, reputation, morals, images and achievements, personal worth, sexuality, affection, prominence and status quo. In addition, they inform people about themselves and their ideal character and sometimes, ads sell addiction. The critical objective of media is to bring viewer to marketers, the same way TV shows deliver commercial to viewers. In efforts to fulfill their objectives, ads, magazines and other commercials oppress women. The paper seeks to investigate how advertising commercial degrades women in their work. Discussion Various feminist and other scholars assert than diverse television commercials, magazines, newspapers, and other media outlets are degrading and disrespectful to female body because they hyper-sexualize women, or portray women as sex objects or a weaker sex. Advertisements influence people thoughts and emotions such as adolescents who are mostly vulnerable because they are weak and inexperienced clients, and the main targets of various ads. Teenagers are in the learning stage – realizing the responsibilities and values and building self-concept, (Skinner, 2003). Various adolescents are increasingly sensitive to adverse influence and experiences some challenges to resist and question the powerful cultural messages reflected and reinforced in these advertisements. Advertisements are a form of national peer influence that ruin privacy and personal standards and values of women. The main message people learn for media advertisements and commercials are stereotypes about men and wo men. Advertisements create an imaginary environments where by people (women) are never obese, ugly, poor or disabled. Advertisements portray women in different degrading roles (as sex objects and house helps). As homemakers, women are pathologically preoccupied by hygiene, debates the virtues of product cleaning with herself and minds of the ring on the collar. Women feel guilty of being ugly and for not making a better mother or wife. Similarly, this advertisement portrays a typical woman as long-legged, slender and tender, (Gunter, 2002). All attractive females in magazines (such as minority females), irrespective of viewer and products, correspond to this principle. Consequently, women are mainly pressurized to copy this idea, and feel guilty and worthless if they fail. Such advertisements degrade women because they instill in them a notion that their lovability, desirability and beauty lies on their physical perfection. In Kellog’s PEP Vitamin paper, the advertisement por trays a degrading image of a woman. The advertisement heading proclaims, â€Å"The more a woman works, the cutter (beautiful) she appears.† The message from the images is that the secret of a woman’s beauty lies on her housekeeping prowess, (Skinner, 2003). The husband exclaims, â€Å"Gosh honey, you are better on cooking, hygiene and house dusting.† Similarly, the female body answers, â€Å"Vitamin.† The woman always get vitamins for the husband – this implies she must fulfill a man’s ego desires to achieve her beauty. Sexuality of women is utilized to market all market brands. For instance, products of men, to appeal sexually to a woman and entice men to purchase products and for women advertisements attracts men so as to reconsider their images as they read the advertisements and watch a TV commercial. Various magazines entail advertisements and images where females are assured that live, breathe and work to satisfy the male

Law Criminal law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Law Criminal law - Essay Example blished in the case of R v Abdul Hussain, Aboud, Hasan, Naji, Muhssin, Hoshan [1999] CLR 57 it was held that in order to establish duress as a defence it had to be established that there was imminent peril of death or serious injury. However, as established in the Hoshan case it was held that whilst the period of time elapsing between the peril and the Defendan’t act was relevant, it wasn’t determinative. In the case of Linda must further demonstrate that she was forced to act and give a false alibi due to a reasonable fear of injury. Secondly, she must satisfy the objective test that a reasonable person would have responded to the threat in the same or similar manner as she did [R v Graham [1982] 1 WLR 294]. Alternatively, as established in the case of R v Hasan [2005] UKHL voluntary association with criminals known to be violent will prohibit the defence of duress. As such, this may prejudice Linda’s ability to rely on the defence. b) Richard will not be able to rely on the defence of duress as there is no immediate risk of harm or death. However, he may be able to rely on the defence of necessity, which is again limited in scope (R v Martin [1989] 1 ALL ER 652. If Richard can establish that the alternative of waiting for an ambulance would have resulted in serious harm to his wife then he may be able to rely on the defence of necessity. Again, he would have to satisfy the objective test that a reasonable person would have acted in the same or similar manner [R v Graham [1982] 1 WLR 294]. c) Whilst necessity is not a defence per se, if Sandra can demonstrate that there was a real risk of injury or death (which there was in this case) she will have strong grounds for relying on the defence of necessity ((Re A Minors) Conjoined Twins: Medical Treatment) 4 All ER 961. Sandra will also have to satisfy the objective test. However, if her defence of necessity fails, she will be potentially liable for involuntary manslaughter due to the lack of mens rea for

Strategic Analysis of Korean Airline

Strategic Analysis of Korean Airline Excellence in Flight, which is their mission to serve operational excellence, service excellence, and innovative excellence. So far, this is the slogan of Korean Air and their main business is air transportation that deals with passenger, cargo, and aircraft maintenance service with cabin crews training service (1969). Firstly, have confidence and affection of customer and offer best service. Secondly, Create wealthy life value and desirable social value as doing moral management. Last, motto is Support creativity of employees and help growth of abilities (2013). As Global Airline, which got the Three Best which are Best Service, Best Reliability, Best Management, Korean Air concentrates its capabilities on internationalization, Knowledge, and E-business by devoting all energies to safety and innovative operation as well as improving its image to strengthen the phase (2013). Although by looking in an internal business aspect from Korean Airline, is currently focusing on the performance of human resource management or system and which had been settled down deeply through Korean Airline organizations culture. The company is focusing on the trust between capital and labor, which brings them to help and rely on each other as family members. The familiar community idea does not only help them to overcome the difficulties but it also gives them the motive of power. Another Human Resource systems based on philosophy is to bring up or level up human resources to lead the era of change. To do so, Korea Air concentrates on educating employees by improving employees capabilities and implanting attachment and devotion to the organization (2010). It is Korean Airs main purpose to make Korean Air become one of the worlds best airlines by these educated employees providing better services. However, this management demands employees sacrifice too much that squeezes the employees without an exception. This may work for a short period of time, but when it works for a long term, the employees would feel tired and have complaints. Adding more information, most Asian countries business structure or the business systems are still maintaining with owners strong belief on the performance, as squeeze management and its the key for the success (2010). It is because the organization only thinks about itself without considering the employees, and there is no time to recharge the employees energies and has no system that lets them express their opinions or thoughts. This proves how the communication is not working well. Since there is no sharing between capital and labor, there have been some problems occurring. Concernment with internal aspect from the current Korean Air s Business Structure, Vertical Structure, has the lack of inadequate Human Resource Management (HRM) system (2013). This kind of businesses structure might occur the misconnection between the each department and misunderstanding one from the others. Specifically this also can be connected to the main fact, which is the lack of communication with Korean Air employees union. Like other companies, Korean Air has their labor union, too. Almost every company in the world has a labor union, which claims employees rights as well as protecting employees opinions. But now this problem has come with a very serious issue in Korean Air. The employees call for their labor union goes against democracy is the procedure how they select a representative. In order to be elected as a union president, the candidate should make a good relationship with not individual employees but other representatives on the board. From the research the representative gains a lot of money during the 3years of representatives time (2013). Therefore, this can be seen as a very appealing job for many people whom having a black heart. Consequently, this can cause a direct affect by having a disconnection between the company and employees because of not equal elections. With by fortune, there has been changing breeze through this matter of undemocratic elections referred to the Korean Airline Workers Union news. What I would like to say at this point is that the number of unions and the form of a certain labor union is nothing more important than their relationship as they can come up with beneficial agreements without any dispute from mutual understandings. To suggest the solutions in details; Firstly, making solid relationships between labor and capital is the main role in order for Korean Air to take a NO.1 market share forward airline companies in their industry field. What Im suggesting for this issue is that new perspective in handling Labor Unions is required to solve this problem. What they need is the middle manager who treats the conflicts between workers and the company to help staff feel being respected. For instance, Southwest Airline, the most successful business case in the airline industry has a certain middle manager that manages less than10 underlings. Their role in the perspective of HRM is a bridge which means the middle managers deliver the complaints to the top manager and provide the inferior workers with counseling. To offer these kinds of services to their internal customers, middle managers are required to take the leadership training once in a year (2010). On other hand, In the case of IBM, they have a firm company culture that the complaints are directly sent to executives and then the executives give back the message including what the reaction will be to the original person of the complaints. Furthermore, making the formal and informal organizations practical is useful. For example, holding a round-table conference between labor and management and a joint labor-management is necessary to understand what another party wants. When these functions are working very well, both parties can derive the responsibility and ownership (2013). Therefore, the performance of management will cause a growing the reputation and popularity of Korean Air. Furthermore, this strategy management made me has an enormous expectation from Korean Air and I also expect in the near future their slogan might include Excellence in Management. Korean Airline SWOT Analysis (S)trengths The Strength of Korean Airline has built up global relationship which calls Sky team. It has alliance with international airlines such as Russian Airlines, Aero Mexico, Air France, KLM, Alitalia, Continental airlines, Czech Airlines, and Delta. Having different types of aircraft can be benefits to provide variety of services for passengers in flight. Korean Airlines has 180 Aircrafts in 2013. In addition, Korean Airlines represent First Place in Cargo part from 2004 until now. As increasing of reputation, more and more people became to use service in Korean Airlines (2008). (W)eaknesses Due to disaster from Guam accident in 1997, Korean Air has negative image as an accident airline. Some people still are afraid the flight with Korean Air. Asiana Airline, which is competitor airline in Korea, has similar flight routes with Korean Air. As a result, it can bring low revenue and income for Korean Air to operate their business. For any big airline, it always has shortage of time and complexity system (2008). (O)pportunities As increasing of globalization, Korean Air has possibilities to expand their business from local to global. The one of outstanding Incheon International Airport, which is ranking number one in the world, in Korea, Korean Air can use as a marketing system to improve its business through this airport (2013). From this, it also has opportunity to grow its more reputation through brand power. They can also still provide more variety of services by using different types of aircraft with Sky team. (T)hreats Korean does not have fuel resource. As changing of economic situation, Korean Air may need to pay more fuel price that can affect business operating. In addition, Labor union can be obstacle when it has different idea with employees (2013). Especially, Pilot union can be representative example. If they decide not to work, Korean will not able to keep their business.

Case Study Tod and Reggie Essay

After speaking with Mr. Todd and Mr. Reggie I have concluded that they would be great candidates for couples counseling. Taking away the fact that they are the same sex, I do not feel that it should affect the outcome of the services that will be provided for the couple listed above. I am very proud of Mr. Todd and Mr. Reggie for coming in to seek counseling as a couple. That within its self speaks volumes to the commitment of their relationship and love for one another. I advised both parties involved about the necessity for counseling. Letting them know that most couples come in to seek help when they feel that this is the last result before breaking up. It’s difficult to move forward in a relationship when anger and resentment have built up to such a degree that there are few conflict-free areas of discussion. Seeing a professional to help you talk to each other so you are not disagreeing on the smallest of things and arguing over the same situations with no resolutions, ca n be a very good idea. I assured them that we would do all in our power to make sure that we set some realistic goals at the ending of each session. We went on to talk and I gathered some information that I felt was interesting and important. I feel that I would like at some point to speak with each Mr. Todd and Mr. Reggie on an individual session. I will determine that as we move further into the sessions and gather if they would like to have a session where they are able to speak with me one on one. I have devised a plan that would help them with the extended family issues that they both are undergoing, also some information on anger and domestic violence, as well as some communication skill building exercises that they a can work on with each other as well as for their personal gain. Going over their family issues I felt held a lot more value in their lives and if could be addresses would help remove some of the stress and anxiety they both undergo on a day to day basis. We talked about the effect that they felt the roles of the absent extended families where causing in their relationship. I did ask questions such as â€Å"Are you families aware that you are an interracial couple?†, â€Å"Is that a reason that you have limited or no contact?†, â€Å"What was the reaction of your family when you told them that you were gay?†, â€Å"Where your families there for you while incarcerated?†, â€Å"How was your relationship with your family before telling you were gay?† , â€Å"Was you and your family closer before you went to prison?† They each answered honestly about the feelings they had incurred during the past few years of their lives. We talked about a support system outside of each other and their families. They both agre ed the lack of family support had a negative impact on their relationship, and have not been able to fully accept it. I informed that their families’ acceptance of their relation would take time, and should be viewed as a process. They would have to make some tough choices to whether or not to continue to try and have their family in their lives are work solely on their relationship. They will have to some type of understanding on their extended family situations. Not dealing with it can be unhealthy and they will need to ask which relationship is most important to them at this time. I did advise until their families where ready to come to terms with their relationship, they should look into starting a family of friends and others who understand their relationship. This could consist of friends who are straight and homosexual. I handed them some fliers to some local coming out groups that meet in there are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I felt it would be a great way to give them another outlet to network amongst individuals who have been through are going through what they are currently going through. I handed out pamphlets on domestic violence to each Mr. Todd and Mr. Reggie. I felt we needed to address the issues of anger and physical threats or actions toward one another. I did also advise them that they I would have to report any physical violence that I am made aware of. To help alive them of the stress they both made out contracts of good faith agreements that they would walk away and respect the others space if a conversation was turning violent and they felt it may result in a physical altercation. We all shook on it and dug deeper into why they felt they needed to result to physical or verbal violence. They were informed of the domestic violence statics in relationships that end in death. Both men agreed that that is not what they wanted for one another. They were encouraged to do some research on domestic violence which they both where highly surprised by what they had found. We also started anger management skills for the both of them. I had them make a rule poster to place in their homes to remind them of the session. We went over 10 steps that would help them both with managing their anger. I did inform them that it would not come over night and they would have to make conscious decisions to apply these skills once they leave the session. Taking time to cool off before addressing why you are angry would be the first stop. Then calmly once you have gathered all your thoughts letting the person or your partner know why you were angry. I noticed how in shape Reggie was and advised maybe exercising or doing something that brings joy and peace to them. Think before you speak was a very good one. That way they did not say things they truly did not mean. Once you say something you cannot take it back so you must watch what you say. Next try and come up with a solution to help you not from becoming so angered by an action or comment. That could be just walking away or making a joke to ease the tension. Use the â€Å"I† statement and not the â€Å"You† statements. Once you have talked about it, let it go. Do not keep it bottled up inside you and have resentment for the person. Again make a joke or say something off the wall when you feel that it may be heading towards you becoming angered. That could be let’s just get some ice cream and talk about this later, to you see that squirrel fly by on the balloon? Just something that will lighten the mood and redirect you both to important situation at hand. Maybe making a relaxation area or technique that you can do, that helps calm you down. That could be reading a book, going to see a movie, shopping, cleaning, or writing. Lastly when all else fails and you don’t know what to do. Seek help before something bad happens. After a few sessions I was to hear that they had implemented these practices and things had started looking better for them. Those anger management exercises lead into working on their communication with each other. Reggie may have been more physically dominating, but Todd was more verbally dominating. I noticed that Todd would over talk Reggie in sessions, and I didn’t think he meant to do it on purpose. Todd was unaware of it and did not fully understand that it would cause Reggie to feel in adequate therefore Reggie would lash out with violence because he felt his voice and opinions where not heard or valued. Todd was amazed that something so small could be so powerful. We began working on listening to each other. Really hearing what the other was saying and validating each other’s opinions and values. The way that had been raised played a large part in the way they communicated with each other. Being open and honest with each other would help them go along way as well with communicating. It would bring them closer with each other. Also paying attention to the nonverbal cues that they give off when feeling frustrated. Staying focused on what they are talking about at the time. Not talking about something that happened in the past or what could happen. Just stay focused on the subject at hand and make sure to settle that issue. Try to not get so emotional when talking about subjects that are important. Look at the whole picture and not just how you feel about the subject. Know when to just throw your hands up and walk away from the discussion if you feel that it is not going the way you want it to go. You do not always have to be right, and it gives your partner the comfort that you are willing to compromise in tough situations. Again make jokes or just go in for a big kiss. That always helps and lets your partner know they are more important to you. Again that brings down the tension in the conversation and gives you both a chance to rethink things over. Never know that kiss may just make them forget what was being said and you can go for some ice cream. Lastly remember communicating is more than talking, it is also actions. Maybe leaving notes or gifts, or just signs that you are thinking of each other always helps. It could be as small as taking out the trash with our being asked to as large as a vacation to a beach resort. No matter how big or small the gesture your partner will appreciate it. After these sessions with Mr. Todd and Mr. Reggie I have seen growth. I am happy to report that Reggie’s back home with Todd. They both have found jobs and are currently making their apartment cozier and entertainment friendly. They continue to go out and meet people in there are who accept them for them. They have a network of support and are also helping out with recently released inmates who are also gay and going through some of the same obstacles that faced. Todd’s mother has actually came and visited him and Reggie. Todd stated that it will take her some time to get used to but she is giving some more support. Unfortunately Reggie’s sisters had not come around but we were able to help Reggie get some closure of his mom’s death. He continues to seek therapy for the loss and he is doing a wonderful progress. He did admit dealing with his family issue and the death of his mom have helped his anger issues and he is able to calm himself down very easily now. Todd and Reggie are listening to each other and communicating with each other very well. They still have a ways to go, but in the short time they have started practicing the techniques they have made excellent strides towards approving. Todd listens more to Reggie rather than over talking him. It doesn’t matter who you are the same fundamentals of love are all the same. We start from our personal backgrounds and to the way we communicate with each other. Todd and Reggie are all of us in some sort of way. Being gay or straight we all have the same problems. With the correct education and help and support we can all over come any obstacle that is placed before us. References Grohol, J. (2009). 9 Steps to Better Communication Today. Psych Central. Windows 7 vs. Windows 8

Topic: Contrasting differences, resemblance and evaluation of two computer operating systems, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The release of Windows 8 has divided the online community in two contradictory groups. Some users appear to enjoy the new features and performance of the newest Windows operating system, while others recommend choosing its well-received predecessor Windows 7 (Mikoluk, 2013). The purpose of this essay is to examine some of the primary characteristics of these operating systems. These comprise of: user interface, essential built-in software components, system requirements and finally, performance of two systems based on various computer test results. This essay has been organised in the following way, firstly it looks at vital characteristics of operating system user interface, it continues by analysing essential built-in software components, then proceeds by highlighting system requirements and finally, it will outline the performance of two systems based on various co mputer test results.User interface is an outer layer and one of the key components of the operating ystem, which can be characterized and described by numerous aspects such as design strategy, start menu layout and touch screen functionality. Windows 7 keeps basic principles of conventional Windows interface building on â€Å"Aero† visual style features, such as subtle animations and translucent glass windows enabling a wide range of desktop personalisation possibilities (Bott et al. 2011). Incorporation of the Metro design language for Windows 8 introduces a completely new tile-based design strategy, which is radically different from traditional Windows representation ocusing on only what is needed † reducing to the essence and celebrating content. ‘ (Clayton, 2013). Windows 7 start menu keeps the familiar two-column layout with the Start button located in the left corner of the taskbar (Coward and Knittel, 2010).Whereas in Windows 8, the start menu is replaced w ith a Start screen, where well-known desktop icons have been substituted with large tiles and â€Å"Live† tiles displaying real-time information and is missing the Start button (Boyce and Tidrow, 2013). Moving to touch-screen characteristics, Windows 7 software operates with imited amount of touch gestures and its targets originally designed for a miniature arrow cursor are too small (Pogue, 2013).In contrast, Windows 8 is built with focus on touch input, featuring all the latest touch screen technology innovations and introducing an expanded number of available gestures as well as a touch-friendly interface with large targets (Cirque, 2012). and security applications. Internet Explorer 8 comes as a preinstalled attribute of Windows 7 exclusively for US customers featuring the familiar â€Å"Aero† visual style user interface with add-on browser extensions as well as integrated Web Search box and abbed browsing (Stanek, 2010).Windows 8, on the other hand, comes with lat est Internet Explorer 10 browser promoting the minimalistic Metro user interface, moving away from add-ons; counting on site developers to enrich the browsing experience for users by enabling feature detection technology (Boyce and Tidrow, 2013). Internet Explorer 10 Start screen includes web search box combined with address bar and also offers multitasking with tabs (Microsoft, 2013).Moving to Security Management, Windows 7 features include built-in Firewall network security system and Windows Defender spyware protection; however for the better defence it s advisable to additionally install Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus software (Bott et al. , 2011). In Windows 8, security is also maintained by Firewall and extended confguration of Windows Defender, which replaces Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft, 2013).When considering similarities, both operating systems have identical minimal hardware requirements, which enable the two to run on wide range of machines (Microsof t, 2013). At he Microsoft Worldwide conference 2011 in California Tami Reller underlined: In both of our Windows 8 previews, we talked about continuing on ith the important trend that we started with Windows 7, keeping system requirements either flat or reducing them over time.Windows 7 and Windows 8 software is compatible with computers consisting of: not less than 1 gigahertz processor or faster, at least 1 gigabyte of free RAM for 32-bit versions or minimum 2 gigabytes for 64-bit versions, a free hard disc space of 16 gigabytes for 32-bit systems or 20 gigabytes for 64-bit systems as well as Microsoft DirectX9 graphics card with WDDM driver (Egan, 2012). Turning to the criteria of performance, there are significant differences in the timings hat operating systems require for essential operations such as: booting up, shutting down, waking up from sleep mode and 3D graphics implementation. As stated by Walton (2012), Windows 8 continues to expand on the effectiveness of Windows 7, w hich has proven to be a fast and productive operating system, by showing a number of improvements compared to its precursor. Muchmore's test results (2012) revealed that the booting time for Windows 8 is significantly reduced by almost a half compared to Windows 7; 17 and 38 seconds correspondingly. He also reported that he shut down time showed similar improvements; the latest version of Windows took 10 seconds, while the older operating system was 2 seconds slower.According to Muhammad (2013), Windows 8 is also faster waking up from sleep mode with only 10 seconds required for this operation which is 3 seconds ahead of Windows 7. However, Windows 7 3D graphic performance was moderately faster, although both operating systems showed very similar results (Walton, 2012). differences in both operating systems. Firstly, the most obvious difference is that Windows 7 represents traditional Windows interface, while the most recent operating ystem promotes innovative Metro design strategy with large tiles instead of familiar icons.

Billy Bishop - World War I Ace

Billy Bishop - World War I Ace Billy Bishop - Early Life Career: Born February 8, 1894 at Owen Sound, Ontario, William Billy Bishop was the second (of three) child of William A. and Margaret Bishop.   Attending Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute as a youth, Bishop proved a marginal student though excelled in individual sports such as riding, shooting, and swimming.   Possessing an interest in aviation, he unsuccessfully attempted to build his first aircraft at age fifteen.   Following in his older brothers footsteps, Bishop entered the Royal Military College of Canada in 1911.   Continuing to struggle with his studies, he failed his first year when he was caught cheating. Pressing on at RMC, Bishop elected to leave school in late 1914 following the beginning of World War I.   Joining the Mississauga Horse regiment, he received a commission as an officer but soon fell ill with pneumonia.   As a result, Bishop missed the units departure for Europe.   Transferred to the 7th Canadian Mounted Rifles, he proved an excellent marksman.   Embarking for Britain on June 6, 1915, Bishop and his comrades arrived at Plymouth seventeen days later.   Sent to the Western Front, he soon became unhappy in the mud and tedium of the trenches.   After seeing a Royal Flying Corps aircraft pass over, Bishop began seeking an opportunity to attend flight school.   Though he was able to secure a transfer to the RFC, no flight training positions were open and he instead learned to be an aerial observer. Billy Bishop - Beginning with the RFC: Assigned to No. 21 (Training) Squadron at Netheravon, Bishop first flew aboard an Avro 504.   Learning to take aerial photos, he soon proved skilled at this form of photography and began teaching other aspiring airmen.   Sent to the front in January 1916, Bishop operated from a field near St. Omer and flew Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.7s.   Four months later, he injured his knee when his aircrafts engine failed at takeoff.   Placed on leave, Bishop traveled to London where his knees condition worsened.   Hospitalized, he met socialite Lady St. Helier while recuperating.   Learning that his father had suffered a stroke, Bishop, with St. Heliers aid, obtained leave to briefly travel to Canada.   Due to this trip, he missed the Battle of the Somme which started that July.   Returning to Britain that September, Bishop, again with St. Heliers assistance, finally secured admission to flight training.   Arriving at the Central Flying School at Upavon, he spent the next two months receiving aviation instruction.   Ordered to No. 37 Squadron in Essex, Bishops initial assignment called for him to patrol over London to intercept night raids by German airships.   Quickly boring of this duty, he requested a transfer and was ordered to Major Alan Scotts No. 60 Squadron near Arras.   Flying older Nieuport 17s, Bishop struggled and received orders to return to Upavon for further training.   Retained by Scott until a replacement could arrive, he achieved his first kill, an Albatros D.III, on March 25, 1917, though he crashed in no mans land when his engine failed.   Escaping back to Allied lines, Bishops orders for Upavon were rescinded.    Billy Bishop - Flying Ace: Quickly earning Scotts trust, Bishop was appointed a flight commander on March 30 and achieved his second victory the following day.   Permitted to conduct solo patrols, he continued to score and on April 8 downed his fifth German aircraft to become an ace.   These early victories were obtained via a hard-charging style of flying and fighting.   Realizing that this was a dangerous approach, Bishop shifted to more surprise-oriented tactics in April.   This proved effective as he downed twelve enemy aircraft that month.   The month also saw him earn a promotion to captain and win the Military Cross for his performance during the Battle of Arras.   After surviving an encounter with German ace Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron) on April 30, Bishop continued his stellar performance in May adding to his tally and winning the Distinguished Service Order. On June 2, Bishop conducted a solo patrol against a German airfield.   During the mission, he claimed three enemy aircraft shot down as well as several destroyed on the ground.   Though he may have embellished the results of this mission, it won him the Victoria Cross.   A month later, the squadron transitioned into the more powerful Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5.   Continuing his success, Bishop soon ran his total to over forty achieving the status of highest-scoring ace in the RFC.   Among the most famous of the Allied aces, he was withdrawn from the front that fall.   Returning to Canada, Bishop married Margaret Burden on October 17 and made appearances to bolster morale.   Following this, he received orders to join the British War Mission in Washington, DC to assist in advising the US Army on building an air force. Billy Bishop - Top British Scorer: In April 1918, Bishop received a promotion to major and returned to Britain.   Eager to resume operations at the front, he had been passed as British top scorer by Captain James McCudden.   Given command of the newly-formed No. 85 Squadron, Bishop took his unit to  Petite-Synthe, France on May 22.   Familiarizing himself with the area, he downed a German plan five days later.   This began a run that saw him raise his tally to 59 by June 1 and reclaim the scoring lead from McCudden.   Though he continued to score over the next two weeks, the Canadian government and his superiors became increasingly concerned about the blow to morale if he were to be killed.   As a result, Bishop received orders on June 18 to depart the front the following day and travel to England to aid in organizing the new Canadian Flying Corps.   Angered by these orders, Bishop conducted a final mission on the morning of June 19 which saw him down five more German aircraft and raise his score to 72.   Bishops total made him the top-scoring British pilot of the war and second-highest Allied pilot behind Rene Fonck.   As many of Bishops kills were unwitnessed, historians in recent years have begun to question his total.   Promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 5, he received the post of Officer Commanding-designate of the Canadian Air Force Section of the General Staff, Headquarters Overseas Military Forces of Canada.   Bishop remained in the job until the end of the war that November. Billy Bishop - Later Career: Discharged from the Canadian Expeditionary Force on December 31, Bishop began lecturing on aerial warfare.   This was followed by a short-lived passenger air service that he started with fellow Canadian ace Lieutenant Colonel William George Barker.   Moving to Britain in 1921, Bishop remained engaged in aviation concerns and eight years later became chairman of British Air Lines.   Financially devastated by the stock market crash in 1929, Bishop returned to Canada and ultimately obtained a position as vice president of the McColl-Frontenac Oil Company.   Resuming military service in 1936, he received a commission as the Royal Canadian Air Forces first air vice-marshal.   With the beginning of World War II in 1939, Bishop was elevated to air marshal and tasked with overseeing recruitment. Highly effective in this role, Bishop soon found himself compelled to turn away applicants.   Also overseeing pilot training, he aided in authoring the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan which guided the instruction of nearly half those who served in the Commonwealths air forces.   Under extreme stress, Bishops health began to fail and in 1944 he retired from active service.   Returning to the private sector, he accurately predicted the postwar boom in the commercial aviation industry.   With the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, Bishop offered to return to his recruitment role but his poor health led to the RCAF politely declining.   He later died on September 11, 1956, while wintering in Palm Beach, FL.   Returned to Canada, Bishop received full honors before his ashes were interred at  Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound.
